"The Parent Map..." Parent Education Support Meetings
...parenting is a journey...

As a parent of two children who attended ONHS, I always appreciated chances to connect with other ONHS parents and chat about anything that was concerning during times of frustration or confusion. Knowing that other parents were navigating through the same murky waters of parenting teens is comforting in itself. Come join us to chat about your parenting life... get information, give information and maybe laugh some ...but learn lots!

Tuesday, 7:00 - 8:00 pm - Room 201 (& Room 202)

Food Network special
2009 National ProStart Invitational
Airing on December 5, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. Central time.

Top of the Class featuring ProStart students from
North's Culinary Program & Guy Fieri
popular Food Network host of three shows
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Guy’s Big Bite and Ultimate Recipe Showdown.
Be sure to check local listings for the air time in your time zone!

If you haven’t been able to catch the excitement of the National ProStart Invitational first-hand, Top of the Class will give you a taste of the competition. You’ll meet the outstanding students from the Olathe Program who will lead our industry into the future and experience all the highs (and challenges!) of competition. Prepare to be blown away by the passion and talent of the ProStart students from Kansas as they race to beat the clock. Knives flashing, sauces bubbling, judges critiquing - hold on to your seats as pressure mounts. This is the competition that Olathe North paced 2nd in the nation in, bringing home $227,000.00 in scholarships and raising the bar for the rest of the metro area programs.

ELL Honors Luncheon

On October 29, 2009 seven students from Olathe North High School attended an Honors ELL Luncheon hosted by superintendent, Pat All.  Etsegenet Ayele, Jamie Hartford, Tigist Kenea, Maria Flores, Astrid Trejo, Daniel Guiterrez, and Tesema Getaneh were all recognized for their outstanding academic achievement.  Each of these students are considered leaders in the ELL program.  They have found great success in academics while learning the English language.

Olathe North Screamin’ Eagles Marching Band
and Eaglettes Dance Team

Tuesday, October 13, the band and dance team participated in the 24th annual Tournament of Champions Marching Festival at Missouri Western University in St. Joseph, Missouri.

19 high school bands from Kansas and Missouri braved the cold, rainy evening to perform for a panel of six judges. The Olathe North Band earned a score of 86.7 and took 1st place in the Class 4A division (bands are grouped by their size, not by school size). In the very closely contested event, Olathe North also had the highest score of all the performing bands and earned the overall Grand Champion Trophy! A fantastic accomplishment considering their highest previous finish was 7th place overall, last year.

The Olathe School District gave a tremendous showing in the festival and was well-represented in the awards. Olathe North was the highest scoring band; Olathe East was 2nd place overall (a mere 2 tenths behind); followed by Olathe South in the third place overall. A recap is below: (Awards are given for the top 3 scores in each division; the overall grand champion; and for several special awards)

Both are seniors in the Olathe North Softball Program and helped lead last years team (which was coached by Sarah Hanson) to NFCA All-Academic Team honors. This is a real accomplishment.
Being a Kansas Honor Scholar is something within its self, but doing it as an athlete is even more impressive. These girls at to be congratulated!

DEBATERS PLACE 6TH IN THE NATION

2009 National Debate winners

For the last two years Olathe North has been the ONLY Olathe school to send teams to the national tournament. This June Kendall Kaut and P. J. Githens turned in a DOMINATING performance. they competed in 6 preliminary rounds with 2 judges per round and won 10 of those 12 ballots and did not lose a round as the 2 losses were in split decisions. Kendall was awarded 13th place and P. J. was the 5th PLACE DEBATER IN THE COUNTRY!

After 5 rounds of elimination competition they were one of only 3 undefeated teams left in the tournament. In round twelve they took their only 3 ballot loss of the tournament from Damien (the eventual national champion). They lost to St. Francis (the 4th place team). They finished 5-2 in out rounds winning 14 of 21 ballots against the top 50 teams in the country. That result would make them the 6th place team in the tournament. 195 teams began debating on Monday. Kyle Custer competed in two events advancing to the 4th round in Expository and making the local news during his first Extemporaneous speech!

Kayla Ma competed very well in Congress averaging a 7 rating that in normal years would break her to semis but her chamber was stacked with talent yielding the eventual national champion among other finalists. This result for Olathe North is the best finish for ANY Olathe school in national policy debate competition ever. We are pleased and humbled by the experience. Our ballot total was 24 wins 9 losses and the cumulative win-loss total in rounds was 9 wins 2 losses and 2 splits over 3 intense days of competition. I hope you all admire the hard work and dedication that Kendall and P.J. displayed this year. It was the professional thrill of a lifetime!
